World's best beaches named

While the UK continues to struggle on with the hangover of winter – which seems to last ever further into March and April these days – expatriates the world over are enjoying fantastic weather and have no doubt already squeezed in a few trips to the beach.

With so many fantastic beaches spilling into the world's oceans and seas, there is constant one-upping between nations and continents for the crown of world's best beaches. And while this is an argument that will likely never be won definitively, the world's largest travel site has done its best to highlight what travellers view to be the ten best beaches in the world, at least in the past 12 months.

TripAdvisor sifted through millions of reviews and opinions left by users on its site to ascertain which beaches people most enjoyed visiting. It came up with 322 beaches worthy of praise around the world, spread across all the continents.

However, the world's best reviewed beach was found to be Baia do Sancho, in Brazil, which was ranked number one in the Top Ten Beaches in the World category. It was joined in the list by Turks and Caicos' Grace Bay in second; Flamenco Beach in Culebra, Puerto Rico, in third; Rabbit Beach of Lampedusa in Italy in fourth; and Whitsunday Island's Whitehaven Beach in Australia in fifth.

The rest of the top-ten list was made up of Playa de ses Illetes in Spain's Formentera; Anse Lazio on the Seychelles' Praslin Island; Lanikai Beach in Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii; Rhossili Bay somewhat closer to home in Gower, Wales' and Playa Norte in Mexico.

"For those fed up with the long cold winter, there's really no better cure than an escape to one of these award-winning beaches," said TripAdvisor's chief marketing officer Barbara Messing.

While Hawaii may only have reached eighth in the list, expats living in the US know that it is the place to go for the best beach experiences in North America. In fact, it absolutely dominated the list of best beaches in the US, with Lanikai Beach, Ka'anapali Beach, Hanalei Beach, Wai'anapanapa State Park, Wailea Beach,  Manini'owali Beach and Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve all making the top ten.ADNFCR-1788-ID-801705720-ADNFCR
