Overseas Health Insurance News: Dubai expats say taxi sex claims a set up

A British woman and an Irish man who were jailed for having sex in the back of a taxi in Dubai have claimed that they were set up after refusing to pay the driver more money.

The expatriates are currently going through the appeals process to try and overturn their convictions after the driver gave two different versions of events to police and prosecutors, reports the National.

A lawyer representing the pair said: "The driver told police a story then told the prosecutors a different story, both contradicting each other."

The welder and recruitment consultant were sentenced to three months in prison followed by deportation at the Misdemeanours Court in November, having been found guilty of two charges.

Consuming alcohol without a licence was the first to which the couple admitted, but the second charge, that of consensual sex, they both denied.

While a policeman who arrived on the scene said he saw the woman without any underwear on, the lawyer said that lab tests prove that sexual activity had not occurred.

A verdict on the appeal is expected for February 5th.
