Can I claim for treatment I’ve already paid for?
If you have paid for medical treatment yourself, you can submit a claim for assessment to recover eligible costs through expatriate.claims, Expatriate Group’s online claims portal.
How reimbursement claims work
This type of claim, sometimes called a reimbursement claim, involves paying for the treatment at the point of care and then submitting evidence of that cost afterwards for it to be paid back to you. This is the standard route for:
- Outpatient consultations and treatment
- Smaller medical expenses
- Costs that fall under any thresholds requiring pre-approval
What you will need to submit for a reimbursement claim
To claim back costs already paid, you will typically need:
- Proof of ID, such as a passport
- Proof of your address
- Invoices for the costs incurred
- Any supporting medical reports relevant to the treatment
Full-colour, high-resolution photographs or scans of these documents are accepted, but original documents should be retained in case they are requested.
When this route is not appropriate
If your treatment involved hospitalisation, or the cost is likely to exceed €1,000, the recommended approach is to obtain pre-approval before treatment via the 24-hour assistance line, rather than paying upfront and claiming afterwards. This allows costs to potentially be guaranteed directly to the treating facility, avoiding the need for you to cover a large cost yourself in the first place.
Submitting your reimbursement claim
Once you have your documents ready, log in to expatriate.claims to submit your claim and track its progress. If you have any questions about whether a specific cost is eligible for reimbursement, the Expatriate Group Claims Department can confirm this before you submit.
