Can I get annual travel insurance as an expat?
Yes, Expatriate Group’s annual multi-trip travel insurance provides 12 months of cover, protecting you on every trip you take abroad during that period. Rather than purchasing a new policy for each journey, a single annual policy covers you automatically each time you travel – making it a practical option for expats who travel regularly throughout the year.
Are there any cover exclusions?
Yes, certain exclusions apply. The main ones to be aware of are:
Pre-existing medical conditions: There is the option to cover stable pre-existing conditions as an add-on, meaning you won’t need to declare them individually at the point of purchase. However, if this option isn’t selected, or if a condition is classed as unstable, pre-existing medical conditions are excluded from cover.
Age limits: A Single Trip Policy can be purchased up to age 72. An Annual Multi-Trip Policy can be purchased up to age 71 and won’t be renewable beyond that. For older travellers, we offer a dedicated over 60 travel insurance for those aged 60 and above.
Sanctioned territories: We’re unable to provide cover, or pay a claim, where doing so would breach UN, UK, EU, or US sanctions law, or where you’re travelling to a country or region the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises against. This means certain sanctioned countries or regions fall outside the scope of cover.
How travel insurance works with Expatriate Group
Our annual travel insurance policy runs for 12 calendar months from the start date. Within that period, you are covered for any number of overseas trips, each up to a maximum duration of either 42 or 90 days per trip depending on the option you select. The policy does not cover trips taken within your own country of residence.
Annual multi-trip cover is available across Expatriate Group’s three plan levels.
- The basic plan covers emergency medical treatment and evacuation.
- The standard plan adds enhanced benefits including baggage delays and loss, money and documents, travel delays and missed departures.
- The comprehensive plan adds cancellation and curtailment cover, protecting you if a trip needs to be cancelled or cut short.
Travel insurance vs international health insurance
Annual expat travel insurance is not the same as international health insurance. International health insurance covers your ongoing healthcare needs while living outside your home country on a long-term, renewable basis.
Whereas, travel insurance covers you during temporary trips abroad. Many expats hold both – using international health insurance as their primary medical cover and annual travel insurance when making trips outside their usual country of residence.
Expatriate Group offers both products, designed to complement each other for expats living and travelling internationally.
