Cover is available from 14 days old (added to a parent’s policy at no extra cost), with individual standalone policies available from age 5. What is travel insurance for under 18s?
Travel insurance for under 18s provides emergency medical cover, evacuation, and trip protection for children and teenagers travelling abroad. Our policies are designed for expat families – covering all nationalities regardless of where your child is based or which country you call home. Unlike standard travel insurance, which is designed for taking holidays, our under-18s cover works for children whose country of residence is abroad, children visiting their passport country, and children at international schools travelling between countries. Cover is available from 14 days old (added to a parent’s policy at no extra cost), with individual standalone policies available from age 5. Options include solo travel, unaccompanied minors, travel with another family, and group or school trips.
Where do you cover?
With Expatriate Group, you can explore new places, take a family trip abroad or head off on an adventure, all with the reassurance of travel insurance designed for those under 18. With cover available for travel across Europe and worldwide, our policies are shaped to fit your child’s age and travel plans. Protection begins as soon as your policy is confirmed and runs until the moment they return home.
Please note, we are unable to offer travel insurance to travellers departing from Benin, Burkina Faso, Dominican Republic, Ivory Coast, Nigeria or Senegal.
Can an expat child travel alone with this insurance?
Yes. Children aged 5 and over can purchase their own travel insurance policy for unaccompanied travel. The policy must be purchased by the child’s parent or legal guardian before travel begins, and the child’s name will appear on the Certificate of Insurance as the insured person. This is particularly relevant for expat families in the following situations:
- Children travelling between their country of residence and their passport country – for example, a British child living in Dubai flying home to the UK to visit family. Standard UK travel insurance typically does not cover people who are not UK residents; our policy covers all nationalities regardless of where they live.
- Children at international schools returning home for holidays, whether flying alone or as part of a school-organised group departure.
- Teenagers travelling independently for gap experiences, study programmes, or visits to extended family in a third country.
For children travelling as unaccompanied minors on commercial flights, the minimum age is set by the airline (typically 5 years) rather than the insurance policy – always confirm the airline’s unaccompanied minor service before purchasing. For children aged 2 to 4, cover can be included on a parent or guardian’s policy. Infants from 14 days old up to age 2 are included on a parent’s policy at no additional premium, provided they are declared at the time of purchase.
Cover for expat children travelling with another family, grandparents or on a school trip
Expat children often travel without their own parents – whether visiting relatives abroad, travelling with a friend’s family during the school holidays, or going on an international school trip. Our under-18s policy covers all of these situations. Children do not need to be travelling with their own parents or guardians to be covered. Policies can be arranged for children in any of the following situations:
- Travelling with another expat family – the child has their own individual policy covering the same trip dates and destination. This is common during school holiday periods when families in the same expat community travel together.
- Travelling with grandparents or other relatives – particularly relevant for expat families whose extended family is based in a different country. The child’s policy covers them regardless of who they travel with.
- International school trips – including trips that cross multiple countries. Individual policies can be purchased for each child; all must be purchased by the child’s own parent or guardian, not by the school.
- Group travel with international clubs, sports teams or youth organisations – contact us for options covering multiple under-18s travelling as part of an organised group.
In all cases, the policy must be purchased by the child’s parent or legal guardian before travel begins. For expat families, please ensure the country of residence declared on the policy matches the child’s actual country of residence at the time of purchase, cover is based on the declared country of residence, not nationality.
Policy Benefits
Key benefits of our under 18s travel insurance
Our travel insurance for under 18s offers flexible and dependable cover tailored to your child’s travel plans. With a core policy that can be customised with optional extras, you can select the protection that best suits their destination, activities and specific needs.
Emergency Medical Evacuation
If your child becomes unwell or is injured while travelling, medical evacuation may be needed to ensure they receive the right care. Our travel insurance for under 18s includes cover for emergency medical transport, so they can be taken to a suitable medical facility quickly and safely if required.
Emergency & Accidental Medical Treatment
Our core policy includes comprehensive cover for medical treatment and emergency evacuation for under 18s. This includes hospital care, prescribed medication, air ambulance transport and other urgent treatment your child may need while abroad. It’s designed to protect against unexpected costs and give you confidence that they’re in safe hands throughout their trip.
Enhanced Benefits & Protection
The Standard policy builds on the cover included in our Basic option, with added extras for more complete protection. For under 18s, this means extra reassurance if things don’t go to plan, such as lost belongings, a misplaced passport, or travel delays. It’s ideal for giving parents and carers peace of mind, wherever you’re travelling to.
Cancellation and Curtailment Cover
In addition to everything included in the Standard policy, our Comprehensive cover also provides protection for trip cancellation and curtailment. This can be especially useful if your child’s travel plans change unexpectedly or the trip needs to be cut short due to unforeseen circumstances, helping to recover costs and reduce disruption.

Under 18s travel insurance FAQs
At what age can children have their own travel insurance policy?
Children aged 5 and over can have their own individual travel insurance policy for unaccompanied travel. This applies regardless of nationality or country of residence – our policies cover expat children of all nationalities living anywhere in the world. Children aged 2 to 4 can be added to a parent or guardian’s policy with a premium applied. Infants from 14 days old up to age 2 are included on a parent’s policy at no extra charge, provided they are declared at the time of purchase.
Are infants covered on a parent’s policy?
Yes, infants from 14 days old up to age 2 are included on a parent or guardian’s policy at no additional premium. The infant must be declared at the time of purchase and will appear on the Certificate of Insurance. Children aged 2 to 4 can also be added to a parent’s policy, but a premium applies for that age group.
Can an expat child be covered if travelling alone or without a parent?
Yes, expat children aged 5 and over can travel with their own individual policy and do not need to travel with a parent to be covered. This is particularly relevant for expat families where children travel between their country of residence and their passport country or travel independently to visit family based elsewhere. The policy must be purchased by the child’s parent or legal guardian before travel begins. For children travelling as unaccompanied minors on a commercial flight, the minimum age is set by the airline, not the insurance policy.
What happens if a child needs medical treatment and a parent needs to travel to them?
The policy includes Accompaniment cover, which pays for a parent or guardian’s travel and accommodation expenses to join a child who requires medical treatment abroad. For expat families this is especially important – if your child is travelling in a different country to where you are based, the Accompaniment benefit covers your travel to reach them, not just transport within the country they are in. Cover is up to £/$/€300 per day up to £/$/€3,000 per trip, and applies when attendance is recommended on medical advice. All accompaniment must be pre-approved by Expat Assist on +44 203 285 7248 (24 hours).
Do expat children need separate travel insurance?
Yes, expat children need specialist travel insurance because standard UK-based policies are designed for UK residents and will not cover children whose country of residence is abroad. Our under-18s policies cover all nationalities and are built for expat families living outside their home country. Whether your child is visiting family in their passport country, travelling with school, or accompanying you on an international trip from your country of residence, a dedicated expat travel insurance policy ensures they have full medical and emergency cover that a domestic insurer’s product would not provide.
Are lost or stolen belongings covered?
Yes, baggage loss and theft cover is included on the Standard and Comprehensive plans, up to £/$/€2,500 per trip with a £/$/€500 per item limit. A police report must be filed within 24 hours of discovery. Mobile phones, tablets, and personal computers are excluded from baggage cover.
Can I get travel insurance for a child travelling with another family?
Yes, you can purchase a standalone under-18s policy for a child travelling with another family, covering the same trip dates and destination. This is a common situation for expat families – children in the same expat community frequently travel together during school holidays. The policy must be purchased by the child’s own parent or legal guardian, not by the accompanying family. The child is covered as the sole insured person on the policy for the duration of the trip, regardless of who they are travelling with.
What is the minimum and maximum age for under-18s travel insurance?
The minimum age is 14 days old, infants from this age can be included on a parent’s policy at no extra cost. Standalone individual policies are available from age 5. This product covers travellers up to age 17. Once a traveller turns 18 they need a standard expat travel insurance policy.
Does travel insurance cover expat children on international school trips?
Yes, our under-18s travel insurance covers expat children travelling on international school trips, including trips that cross multiple countries. Individual policies must be purchased by the child’s own parent or guardian. The policy covers the same trip dates and destination as the school trip. International schools frequently organise trips across multiple destinations – if the trip includes multiple countries, ensure the policy covers worldwide rather than European-only destinations. Note: this is individual cover for the child. The school or organising body will have their own group insurance; always check with the school what their policy covers before purchasing.
Are expat children with medical conditions covered?
Standard policies exclude pre-existing medical conditions, but a Stable Pre-existing Conditions extension is available at additional premium for eligible children. ‘Stable’ means the condition has been present for at least 6 months and has not required hospitalisation, medication changes, or deterioration in the 6 months immediately before travel. All standard exclusions continue to apply to the underlying condition, only acute exacerbations abroad are covered under the extension.
