British mother of two Marnie Pearce, who was jailed in Dubai for three months after being found guilty of adultery, has lost custody of her sons.
A local court has ruled she is an unfit mother and the children should remain with her ex-husband.
Ms Pearce faces deportation to the UK once her sentence has finished and will return to the rest of her close family.
"It will now be down to Marnie to seek whatever custody rights she can when the returns to the UK," a friend of Ms Pearce, Sandy Norman told getbracknell.co.uk.
Her case has highlighted the cultural differences expatriates and travellers to the Middle East sometimes face.
Last year a drunken romance on a beach in the emirates led to international coverage of expatriates and their lifestyle.
When planning to take up expatriate living, Brits are advised to carefully study advice from the Home Office, make themselves aware and be respectful of local law and ensure they have adequate overseas insurance.
