What We cover

Key Health Insurance Features

When you’re living or working overseas you need the best international health insurance, which is why our international healthcare is available to purchase easily online. Since 1997 we have been safeguarding expats, allowing us to offer the best policy features for you.

Medical Expenses

Medical expenses are the costs to treat or prevent an injury or disease. When not covered with international healthcare insurance these costs can be extortionate.

To prevent you from these excessive expenses, one of the main features of Expatriate Group insurance plans is medical expenses. All four of our plans outpatient care for expats, GP services and any hospitilisation costs.

Preventative Care

Your health and well-being, and that of those you love and value, is of paramount importance. Expatriate Group is committed to keeping you all healthy by providing regular health checks and tests. These include vaccinations, annual medical check-ups, and cervical smears.

We even provide for prostate cancer screening and mammograms for the over 45’s

Dental Care

Your general health and well-being also extends to your dental health. Good dental health requires regular and routine check-ups and resulting restorative treatment can be costly.

We provide you with expat dental cover for routine check-ups and treatment. Plus, in the event of further treatment being required, both basic and major restorative treatment.

Optical Care

Changes to your eyesight are inevitable. That’s why Expatriate Group provide optical cover for expats, a benefit covering the cost of an annual eye examination for each person insured under the policy.

Where there is a change to your prescription we will also cover you for the cost of prescription lenses (including standard contact lenses).

Maternity Care

We know that when you are expecting a baby, you need to feel confident that appropriate care is available.

We provide maternity cover for expats once you have been covered by the policy continuously for 12 month. If you become pregnant, we provide for your antenatal appointments in the run up to the big day and for the delivery itself. And to get you back on your feet in those early days, we also allow for home nursing for 5 days after home delivery.

Complementary
Medicine / Therapies

Should you be prescribed complementary treatment, we cover chiropractic help, osteopathy, homeopathy, and acupuncture.
We know how important complementary medicine and therapies can be, particularly when an illness or injury is ongoing, so we extend our cover to ensure expats are as comfortable as possible.

Complementary treatment or medicine must always be provided by a registered and qualified osteopath, chiropractor, homeopath or acupuncturist. Expats will require a written recommendation from a consultation with another medical professional.

Emergency Assistance

In the event of an emergency, one simple call to Expatriate Group’s assistance service provider and arrangements will be made for you to be transported to the nearest location for appropriate treatment.

Through our multilingual 24-hour support partner, we will liaise with you, your family, and the local healthcare services, keeping you continually updated.

24 hour emergency medical assistance is standard on all of our international healthcare plans.

Chronic Conditions

We understand that not all medical conditions can be cured.

Chronic conditions usually require you to have regular check-ups, nursing care, and routine or daily medication. Thankfully, with the right medical support, many people can live a relatively normal life whilst suffering with a chronic condition. However, the financial implications can be devastating.

We support you by providing benefits in respect of both HIV and chronic conditions.

I haven't used my policy yet, but enrollment is foolproof, the policies are easy to read and understand, the price is better than I was expecting for expat health insurance. I have to admit, some of the reviews make me a little nervous, so I will update my review in the event I have to file a claim.

Simple application. Really liked the idea that stable medical conditions that are being treated don't attract complicated and intrusive medical questions. Maybe the insurance industry is waking up to realise that treated stable conditions are a lower risk than the unknown!

International Health Insurance vs Travel Insurance: Which Do Expats Need?

If you are moving abroad rather than travelling temporarily, standard travel insurance is not built for your situation. Travel insurance is designed for short-term trips, typically capped at 30 to 90 days, and covers emergencies only. It has no provision for the ongoing, day-to-day healthcare needs that come with living in another country.

International health insurance is designed specifically for expats. It provides continuous cover for as long as you are living abroad, with no trip length restrictions and no requirement to return home between periods of cover.

Many expats arrive overseas with a standard travel insurance policy in place and assume it is sufficient. In practice, most travel policies void after 30 to 90 days abroad, exclude any condition that develops after departure, and will not cover the routine appointments, prescriptions, and specialist referrals that make up the majority of real healthcare needs. By the time an expat discovers the gap, they are typically already in a position where they need cover.

Already relying on a standard travel insurance policy for your time abroad? Our international health insurance plans are designed for exactly this situation, with instant cover available online. If you are looking for shorter-term protection between trips, take a look at our expat travel insurance.

International Health Insurance FAQs

We have put together some of our most frequently asked questions to help make purchasing international health insurance easier. Don’t forget, you can always get in contact with us if your query still needs answering.

Why do I need international health insurance?

If you are living or working outside your home country, your domestic health insurance will not cover you and access to local state healthcare may be limited, costly, or inconsistent in quality. International health insurance gives you access to private medical treatment wherever you are based, with no out-of-pocket costs at the point of care, 24/7 multilingual support, and the freedom to choose your own hospital or specialist. For many expats it is also a requirement for long-stay visas and residency applications.

Expatriate Group’s international health insurance is available to individuals, families, professionals, digital nomads, students, retirees, volunteers, and missionaries living or working outside their home country. Cover is available across three geographical areas and can be arranged regardless of your nationality. Some restrictions may apply based on age or pre-existing conditions, our team can advise on the most suitable plan for your circumstances.

You can get an international health insurance quote directly online. Select your destination, area of cover, date of birth, and preferred plan to receive an instant quote. Cover can start immediately upon completion of your application. If you would prefer to speak to someone before applying, our team is available by phone or email to guide you through the options.

Yes. Expatriate Group offers short term international health insurance for periods of less than 12 months, suitable for expats on fixed-term assignments, gap years, or extended stays abroad. Short term cover provides the same level of protection as an annual policy and can be arranged online with an immediate start date.

Routine medical check-ups and preventative care are included on Expatriate Group’s Select and Primary+ plans. This includes annual health screenings, cervical smears, mammograms, and prostate screenings. Basic and Primary plans focus on treatment rather than prevention, so if preventative care is a priority the Select or Primary+ plan is the right choice.

You can cancel your Expatriate Group international health insurance policy at any time by contacting our team. If you cancel within the first 14 days and have not made a claim, you will receive a full refund of your premium. Cancellations after 14 days are subject to a pro-rata refund of the unused portion of your premium, less any claims paid. Our team can advise on the process and any applicable terms at the time of cancellation.

Making a claim will not directly result in your policy being cancelled or refused at renewal. However, claims history is taken into account when calculating your renewal premium. Policyholders who remain claim-free during their policy year are eligible for Premium Rewards discounts of up to 20% on renewal, which increase incrementally the longer you remain claim-free.

Expatriate Group provides international health insurance across three geographical areas of cover – worldwide including the USA, worldwide excluding the USA, and Europe/Middle East/Africa/Asia/Oceania excluding China, Hong Kong and Singapore. Within your chosen area of cover you have access to any hospital or clinic of your choice with no network restrictions. If you fall ill outside your area of cover while travelling temporarily, emergency treatment is included.

If you require emergency medical treatment outside your area of cover while travelling temporarily, Expatriate Group’s international health insurance includes emergency assistance to ensure you receive immediate care. This covers emergency hospitalisation, evacuation if necessary, and repatriation to your area of cover once you are stable. Routine and non-emergency treatment outside your area of cover is not included.

Yes. Expatriate Group conducts policy reviews for existing customers to ensure your cover remains appropriate as your circumstances change. If you relocate to a new country, add family members, or want to adjust your plan level or excess, our team can review your policy and recommend any changes ahead of your renewal.

Yes. Expatriate Group is a trading name of Strategic Insurance Services Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the United Kingdom. Our FCA registration number is 307133. You can verify our registration at register.fca.org.uk. We are also authorised to carry on regulated activities in accordance with the provisions granted by the FCA under Part XX of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000.

Expatriate Group offers four international health insurance plans – Select, Primary+, Primary+ Lite, and Primary. All plans include inpatient hospital treatment and emergency medical care. Higher tier plans add outpatient cover, dental and optical care, maternity benefits, mental health support, and preventative care including annual check-ups and screenings. Every plan includes 24/7 multilingual emergency assistance, direct billing at hospitals within your area of cover, and access to any hospital of your choice with no network restrictions.

Yes. Expatriate Group’s international health insurance plans cover families, including a partner and dependent children under a single policy. Family international health insurance cover is available across all four plan tiers. Children are covered from birth, and maternity benefits are available on higher tier plans to cover the cost of delivery and postnatal care.

Cover can start immediately upon completion of your online application. There is no waiting period for new conditions arising after your policy start date. A standard two-year moratorium applies to pre-existing conditions, meaning any condition you experienced in the two years prior to joining is temporarily excluded but may become eligible for cover after two continuous claim-free years.

Yes. Expatriate Group’s international health insurance is designed to move with you. If you relocate to a different country within your area of cover, your policy remains in force. If you are moving to a country outside your current area of cover, you can request a change of area at your next renewal. Our team can advise on the most appropriate area of cover for your circumstances.

Direct billing means Expatriate Group settles your medical bills directly with the hospital or clinic on your behalf, so you never have to pay out of pocket at the point of treatment. When you are admitted to a hospital or clinic within your area of cover, you present your membership details and the provider bills us directly. You do not need to fund the treatment upfront and claim it back afterwards. Direct billing is available at hospitals and clinics across your area of cover.

Mental health cover is available on Expatriate Group’s higher tier plans. This includes treatment for conditions such as anxiety, depression, and stress-related illness, covering inpatient and day-patient psychiatric treatment and, depending on your plan, outpatient consultations with a psychiatrist or psychologist. If mental health cover is a priority, we recommend discussing your requirements with our team when selecting a plan to ensure the right level of protection is in place.

Yes. You do not need to be in your home country to take out an Expatriate Group international health insurance policy. Cover can be arranged online regardless of where you are currently located, and your policy can start immediately upon application. The standard two-year moratorium applies to any pre-existing conditions, but all new conditions arising after your policy start date are covered from day one.

Expatriate Group’s international health insurance premiums can be paid in pounds sterling, US dollars, and euros. You can select your preferred currency when applying for cover online. Benefit limits under your policy are also expressed in your chosen currency, as shown in the benefit schedule for your plan.

Yes. Expatriate Group’s Premium Rewards programme offers policyholders a discount of up to 20% on their renewal premium if they remain claim-free during their policy year. The discount is applied automatically at renewal and increases incrementally the longer you remain claim-free. Premium Rewards is available across all four international health insurance plans and requires no separate application.
