Expatriate insurance policyholders who fancy getting away from it all in the run-up to the festive season could try a weekend at a European Christmas market.
According to figures from iligo.com, the best budget weekends for such shopping experiences can be found in Budapest, Prague and Berlin, with other cheap deals being offered in Brussels, Copenhagen and Vienna.
Clare Peel, new development editor at Berlitz Publishing, said the "tantalising array" of Christmas markets gives overseas health insurance customers the perfect opportunity to find "that extra special stocking filler".
Purveyors of traditional Germanic Yuletide markets might be right at home in Cologne and Vienna, while Prague's offering is a "magical choice" for families with young children, she explained.
"For something traditional with a twist, a visit to Barcelona's Fira de Santa Llucia is worth considering. The fair dates from 1786 and has more than 270 stands selling items from local produce and jewellery to nativity scenes and traditional Catalan musical instruments," Ms Peel commented, adding that the mild temperature could appeal to those hoping to catch some winter sunshine.
