Expatriate Insurance News: UAE expats 'lack cultural knowledge'

Holders of expat insurance living in the UAE have a poor knowledge of the country's customs, new research has indicated.

A survey conducted by 999 Magazine found 72 per cent of those born overseas and living in the UAE were not aware of the local culture, something Lt colonel Awadh Saleh Al Kindi, editor of the publication – which is the official magazine for Abu Dhabi Police and Ministry of Labour – described as "dismaying".

"Many expat residents have a very limited knowledge of the customs, traditions and heritage of the UAE," he stated.

People from over 200 countries now live in the UAE, which comprises of seven emirates, including Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Of the 2,000 expats who took part in the poll, 16 per cent said they "hardly ever" took the time to learn about UAE culture, while half of participants said they did so "occasionally".

This is despite 70 per cent stating they have enough information available to them and Lt colonel Al Kindi said he hopes the survey results "will stimulate people to exert greater efforts in this area".
