Expatriate students worldwide could be offered the chance to study in India after the government passed proposals to create between 800 and 1,000 new universities.
The Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh said that improving educational standards is essential to the continuation of rapid economic development.
Government minister Kapil Sibal said earlier this week that the new universities would be needed within ten years if the current 12 per cent of students carrying on to higher education was to rise to 30 per cent.
"If we in this part of the world recognise the facts, we will realise how important education is for a developing country," he said.
Almost one in three of India’s 1.5 billion-strong population is under 14 and many university places already attract lots of competition in a country where education is a priority in many households.
Those thinking of moving to India to study could consider taking out expatriate health insurance to help reduce costly medical bills.
