Holiday home insurance would benefit from further cover

Expatriates with holiday homes may want to take out extended contents insurance in case of an emergency, the AA has suggested.

While it may be cheaper to insure a property abroad, expatriates will get a better deal if they include emergency travel cover and public liability when organising their holiday home insurance policy, claims the AA.

Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, said: "It obviously will be cheaper if you insure abroad, but you're not comparing like for like because overseas insurers don't provide the same levels of cover."

According to Mr Crowder, getting home insurance cover in the UK will give you more protection, such as food cover, than if you bought the policy abroad.

"For example, they may not include similar levels of public liability or property owners' liability, and there may be other restrictions that you might not be aware of," he added.

Moneysupermarket.com reported in that 40 per cent of property owners in the UK did not have home insurance.
