Expat campaigns for road safety

A British expatriate living in Malta has launched a crusade to improve road safety in the country, the Times of Malta has reported.

Graham Hurdle, who has been living in Malta for two years, is working with the government to start driving courses and has set up a consultancy to advise people on road and safety issues.

According to Mr Hurdle, there are three key elements to improving road safety: education, engineering and enforcement.

"People start learning to drive at the age of two when they see their parents driving. Education must, therefore, start in schools, where children can be taught about the importance of buckling their seatbelts or crossing the road carefully," he told the publication.

New EU regulations mean that from next month potential drivers of passenger-carrying vehicles in Malta will have to pass a four-hour theory test and a two-hour practical in order to get their licence.
