A household expenditure survey by the Qatar Statistic Authority (QSA) revealed that for expatriate families living in Qatar the cost of living had increased by 46 per cent compared to figures from 2001.
Further research found that housing costs for expatriate families accounted for 30.8 per cent of their monthly spending last year which was a rise of 21.7 per cent on 2001.
Qatar, the world's biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas, is experiencing the Gulf region's highest rate of inflation, which is leading to an increase in consumer prices which is hitting expatriates.
Consumer prices rose by 14.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2008 due to escalating rents and food costs.
In an attempt to combat rising inflation levels, the Qatari government has introduced a two-year rent freeze, boosted subsidies and held steel and cement prices for three years.
