Yoga 'promotes a healthy heart'

Practising yoga may help to keep the heart healthy by regulating its beat, says new research.
According to the study published in an upcoming issue of the International Journal of Medical Engineering and Informatics, heart rate variability - a sign the organ is working well - was found to be higher in practitioners than non-practitioners.
After analysing the responses of 84 male volunteers, the Indian Institute of Technology researchers discovered those who practised yogic breathing and exercises had better control over their heart rate.
Expat health insurance customers may have already heard anecdotal evidence suggesting yoga's breathing exercises, stretches, postures and meditation can have a positive impact on mental and physical health.
Scientists now say the ancient art could help to regulate the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, which raise and lower the heart rate and help the body to respond to change.
Last month saw the Dubai Ladies' Club host a yoga session on the beach for both Emirati and expatriate women in a bid to raise money for breast cancer care and research, reports Dubai City Guide.
