UK expats 'sold on Aussie lifestyle'

Increasing numbers of people are taking out expatriate healthcare insurance before heading to Australia to start a new life in the sun, it has been claimed.

Figures from mortgage broker Loan Market revealed that it has received a large number of enquiries from prospective expats looking for coastal properties down under.

The firm said many are looking for homes between A$400,00 (£187,00) and A$600,000 although there was also interest in real estate valued at more than A$1 million.

John Kolenda, executive director for Loan Market Group, said: "UK migrants have been sold on the Australian lifestyle - the sunshine, the beaches and large homes with swimming pools."

He added that while Australia has been hit hard by the economic downturn, many expat insurance policyholders can still enjoy a higher quality of life in the country.

With Britons paying ten per cent more on the euro than they did in September 2008, moving to countries away from the eurozone could be an attractive option for many UK residents, according to Homes Overseas.
