UK calls for skilled foreign nurses

A nationwide shortage of skilled healthcare workers has prompted a recruitment firm to urge staff overseas to consider an expatriate life in the UK.

Hays reports that the "acute shortages" must be addressed through an international recruitment drive, along with more training for nurses already working in the UK.

The job agency says the most affected areas include critical care, accident and emergency, theatre and intensive care.

Staff skilled in obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics and anaesthetics are also in high demand.

Commenting on the issue, Simon Hudson, director of Hays Global Resourcing, described medical talent from abroad as a "lifeline" to British healthcare.

"While most of our temporary and permanent recruitment is carried out locally, the demand for certain skills has outstripped supply," he explained.

Mr Hudson continued by urging Hays' healthcare workers to encourage friends and family to apply for work through the agency to meet the need.

The company claims to be the sixth-largest recruitment agency in the world, currently employing 6,933 staff across 28 countries.
