Turkey is attractive 'to an expatriate on a budget'

People can move to Turkey and become an expatriate in Istanbul even if they earn a relatively small salary, according to Istanbul2010.

Ozgül Ozkan Yavuz, director of events and organisations for the initiative, warned any potential expatriate that Istanbul is not a cheap place to live but it is possible to get by on a budget.

"Istanbul is not cheap. It's a metropolitan city, it has a population of 12 million and not somewhere cheap but of course in every metropolitan area you can live on a budget or you can live the luxury," he said.

Mr Yavuz went on to say that Istanbul will also prove popular with big earners as the city offers something for everyone.

"If you're earning £1000 per month you can still enjoy the city, but if you're earning £10,000, you can still enjoy the city. This is the same for big metropolitan cities and Istanbul is metropolitan," he added.

Research by Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism revealed that the number of foreigners arriving in Turkey in the first nine months of 2008 was 21.5 million.
