Technology helping Brits get healthcare abroad

New technology and improved infrastructure is helping British travellers get better healthcare when abroad.

Two European projects, which use IT-based services for cross-border healthcare provision, have agreed on a common set of messaging standards, reports ICT Results.

The European-funded projects will now improve interoperability across the healthcare services, while helping providers of international healthcare insurance to link with hospitals and to the national healthcare IT infrastructure.

An unnamed European Union official close to the projects said: "With this agreement, we are paving the way for a European standard supporting the necessary communication and data exchange processes for cross-border healthcare in Europe."

The development could help medics determine quickly whether patients have valid medical insurance and speed up payments, ICT Results explained.

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, there are an estimated six million Brits living abroad.ADNFCR-1788-ID-19317901-ADNFCR
