Take out overseas medical insurance when moving to Dubai

People thinking of relocating abroad to Dubai should take out expatriate health insurance cover for their own peace of mind, an online expat magazine has warned.
In an article published by Shelter Offshore, foreign citizens are advised to ensure they have cover sooner rather than later because it looks likely that Dubai will follow the example set by its fellow emirate Abu Dhabi and implement compulsory healthcare plans for expats.
"Most expatriates have private medical insurance already - this is simply because it allows them access to the 'better' private hospitals and clinics," the article points out, adding that healthcare in Dubai is generally of a standard seen in most Western countries.
While the emirate has eradicated diseases such as malaria and measles, expatriates could still suffer respiratory problems because of the sand and heat, while conditions such as dehydration, heat stroke and sunburn are still common with people who have just moved to Dubai.
"Care must be taken to acclimatise slowly to the sometimes extreme climate," the article states.
Meanwhile, the Gulf News reported that Dubai is set to lift sponsorship restrictions on certain categories of employment, so expatriates will have more opportunities to bring their families over to the emirate.
