Swiss expats to gain greater state protection

Organisations representing Swiss expatriates are to benefit from state funding, it has been ruled.

Coming on the back of serious debate within both the country's Senate and House of Representatives, the green light has been given for financial guarantees for the Swiss Abroad party to be guaranteed in national law.

Likewise, the Swiss Review magazine, which is read by thousands of expatriates across the globe, will also be legally entitled to state money, it has also been ruled.

According to figures cited by Swiss Info, around 170,000 Swiss citizens currently live abroad, with a vast majority still residing within mainland Europe, alongside a healthy expatriate community in the United States.

Swiss Abroad, which organises financial support for expatriates who find themselves in emergencies while out of the country, last week saw its attempts to be allowed to compete for seats in the country's parliament be blocked by the Senate.ADNFCR-1788-ID-19066360-ADNFCR
