Spanish government hikes smoking duties

Brits after a budget lifestyle in Spain and looking to take advantage of cheap cigarettes are facing significant price rises on certain products.
The Spanish government has increased its duty on cigarettes by 19 cents, although manufacturers have upped their prices by 35 to 60 cents per packet.
Expatriates may still be paying far less for their cigarettes than they did when living in England, but they will still be likely to pay extra premiums on international health insurance when they take it out.
A British Medical Journal study spanning 50 years has shown smoking reduces life expectancy by ten years.
Because of this, insurers regularly increase smokers' premiums to offset the future cost of medical treatment which they expect to incur.
The recent budget increases on tobacco and fuel will serve to raise much-needed money for the country's coffers and reduce its debt.
