Spain is still expat friendly, says property expert

Spain is still favoured by British expatriates even considering the recent fall in property values.

The country is still "maintaining its attraction for Brits" says property company Rightmove.co.uk.

The company's head of overseas, Robin Wilson, has noted that the country raised its market share in terms of searches made on the firm's website.

Recent reports have illustrated the large falls in property prices, although this appears to have also attracted people looking for cheap overseas property.

Half of the top ten fastest rising searches were for Spanish destinations: "We think this is to a large degree driven by bargain hunters, increasingly drawn to the scent of below market value and distressed sales," Mr Wilson commented.

A representative of the Spanish government has met with foreign secretary David Miliband in Gibraltar for talks, although an agreement on sovereignty is unlikely as both countries claim the colony as their own.
