Rising demand for 'taste of Britain' among expatriates
17/02/09 16:06
Though tens of thousands of British expatriates may not regret their decision to leave the UK for sunnier climes, demand for a taste of home keeps rising, one entrepreneur has reported.
In spite of the difficulties being posed by unfavourable exchange rates, food retail firm Thomas Green's has announced plans to expand its operations across Europe in a bid to keep up with growing demand for "the best of British".
At present, the company already operates stores catering for expatriates in Holland, France, Spain and Portugal, though managing director Philip Evans has now expressed his desire to significantly expand on this over the next few years.
In particular, the businessman is now looking to recruit expatriates as franchise holders, with Thomas Green's offering local businessmen access to its supply network, marketing resources and IT systems.
"It is often better to find someone who has already moved overseas, rather than someone who is about to. It has to be someone who knows the local market and it is helpful it they are bilingual."
Among the most popular items among British expatriates, the firm has revealed, are chocolate, crisps and scones, with Burns Night and Christmas particularly busy times for the retailer.
