Race is on for 2016 Olympics

01/10/09 18:49

Only one day remains before committee judges vote on who will host the 2016 Olympic Games.

Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo are all bidding for the accolade and the winner will be announced tomorrow (October 2nd) at around 18:00 BST.

The selected city could see an influx of expatriate workers in forthcoming years, as the preparations commonly involve large-scale building and regeneration projects.

Chicago is believed to be the lead contender, but many commentators are resisting declaring a strong favourite.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge told the BBC: "I believe it's going to be very close - this is a trend we have seen in the last five to six years."

IOC members cast their vote by secret ballot until one city receives a majority. Those receiving the fewest votes are eliminated after a maximum of three rounds until there is a winner.
