Pre-paid card could help British expatriates
21/07/09 11:46
British expatriates looking for a manageable way to pay while abroad could try a new generation of pre-paid card.
Launched this week the plastic only allows money to be spent which has already been loaded onto the card's account.
Aimed at holidaymakers looking to budget their spending, the payment method could catch on with families of expatriates who come out to visit.
Peter Harrison of moneysupermarket.com told the BBC: "Pre-paid cards offer great foreign exchange rates and are available to everybody."
To create a balance on the card you can either call up or go online and there is no fee when you use it.
One great advantage, says Dan Moore of Which? Money, is that you can never build up any debt.
"The moment you hit zero it'll stop you from getting any more money out," he told the broadcaster.
Costs vary from card to card as each provider will exchange money at a slightly different rate.
