People relocating to Turkey 'should take out expatriate health insurance'

Prospective expatriates considering relocating abroad to Turkey are being urged to take out overseas medical insurance.
Klaus Jurgens, editor of Voices Newspaper, wrote that it is advisable to take out expat insurance when moving to another country because getting medical treatment without adequate cover could become expensive.
"Living in a new environment should not lead us to become careless. Acquiring knowledge about local health care, medical standards and the social security environment of our adopted host country is a top priority," he noted.
Mr Jurgens pointed out that while all foreign visitors can visit any hospital in Turkey for emergency treatment, non-urgent healthcare will incur hefty fees if patients do not have travel insurance for their short-term holiday or expatriate medical insurance if they live there.
He also advised all expats to learn a few health-related words in Turkish too, so they can converse with doctors and other healthcare professionals.
His comments come as the Associated Press reports that a bus has overturned in south-eastern Turkey killing three passengers and wounding 50 others.
