Overseas Health Insurance News: Consul 'in hit and run incident with expatriate driver'

An expatriate driver is being sought by Spanish police after a Belgian diplomat was run over after an argument in a car park.

The Belgian consul to Malaga, Claude de Hennin de Boussu Walcourt, told the Telegraph that he was knocked to the ground by a driver who then fled the scene.

The car had British number plates, he said.

The government official had explained to a woman that it was unsafe to allow her child to play in the car park of the Belgian consulate on the Costa del Sol before she verbally abused him in English.

Mr de Hennin then went inside the building but was approached by a man waiting outside when he emerged later.

"He began to shout insults in English and threatened violence. It was horrible," he told the newspaper.

Consular staff called the police but the man got into a car before authorities arrived.

"He got into a car with British number plates and when I tried to get him to wait until the local Civil Guard arrived, he drove at me and knocked me over," the consul said.

He was treated for bruises at a local clinic.

Those thinking of moving to the Costa del Sol could consider taking out health insurance abroad to help reduce unforeseen medical costs.
