'Offsetting carbon emissions from flights is not the solution'

Expatriates who hoped they could offset their carbon emissions should think again.
According to a spokesperson from pressure group Friends of the Earth (FoE), offsetting the carbon emissions on trips abroad does not constitute an environmentally-friendly holiday.
Brits who choose to live abroad often fly home to see their friends and family and even when they remain fixed in their new countries they often entertain visitors from the UK.
FoE says the best way to deal with climate change is to reduce the number of flights, although "the main responsibility lies with the government, which must end its plans for airport expansion and make it cheaper and easier for people to use greener transport alternatives such as fast rail services", its spokesperson commented.
For some expatriates who live and work overseas air travel is the only viable option, although those Brits who moved abroad to France and other nearby European countries could consider taking the train instead.
Writing in the Guardian, Tom Robbins noted that flying from London to Edinburgh generates eight times the amount of carbon dioxide than if you take the train.
