NIE numbers are 'essential' for expatriates in Spain.

Having an NIE number is essential for any expatriate hoping to live in Spain, says a tax expert for Expatica Spain.

Residents need the Spanish ID number to access public services, such as social security schemes, and to enable them to purchase property.

David Cook from Expatica Spain notes that it is not essential for short-term visitors, but if people want to stay longer "it will be obligatory".

The firm advises that those considering Spain as a possible expatiate destination should take independent advice on tax issues, as they are different from at home.

Spain has long been a favoured destination for Brits seeking warmer climates.

UK and EU citizens can access free or subsidised medical while living in the country.
