Moscow is now the world's most expensive expat city, says survey

Of all the world's cities, Moscow is the most costly for expatriates, a new survey has revealed.

However, Asian cities dominate the top ten most expensive list, which was compiled by HR consultancy Mercer.

Tokyo, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Beijing, New Delhi and Singapore all polled highly in the study, ranking second, third, fourth, eight and tenth respectively.

The economic downturn has been a key factor in the fluctuating costs associated with living in such far-flung centres, notes Mercer's Gangapriya Chakraverti.

"The world's housing markets have been sliding since 2008, and major currency fluctuations in the past few months have also had a strong impact on the comparative cost of expatriate housing," he observed.

Expatriate healthcare costs will vary from country to country and people considering a move to any of these cosmopolitan destinations should factor this into their living costs.

Moscow had previously established itself as a firm favourite of the wealthy - in 2006 Forbes claimed the city had more billionaire residents than any other, except for New York.
