More people will move abroad 'to retire'

Spain and France remain the most popular destinations for British expats considering retirement abroad, according to Saga.

However, spokesperson for Saga Travel Money, Lisa Harris, added that less traditional countries such as Bulgaria are becoming increasingly popular retirement destinations among Brits.

"The most popular destinations chosen by those retiring from the UK are Spain and France in that order. However, there is some evidence to show that less likely destinations are becoming increasingly popular," she said.

A recent poll by Hotproperty.co.uk found that 47 per cent of Brits would rather emigrate upon retirement.

Ms Harris commented: "For those that choose to actually take the jump and retire abroad, the move is often a long-term one which clearly signifies satisfaction with the decision.

"Climate and health obviously play a large part in this and whilst many people are leaving behind lots of friends and family, communities abroad develop quickly and in most areas the locals are more than happy to give a warm welcome to new residents."

The Institute for Public Policy Research forecasts that more than 3.3 million British pensioners will be living overseas by 2050.
