Maltese expats continue love affair

Malta has continued to attract an increasing number of expatriates, especially from the UK, notes Malta Today.
The paper has reviewed the ongoing migration to the region and revealed some interesting facts and figures.
Having assessed a recent census (2005), it found six per cent of Maltese nationals were born in another country - most commonly the UK.
British expatriates account for a third (4,713) of the foreigners now living there and heavily outnumber the Italians (585), the Germans (518) and the French (127).
Despite their love of Malta, expatriates appear not to be adding to the population - one reason perhaps why its birth rate is falling (down 19 per cent in the ten years to 1998).
Malta is a favoured destination for British expatriates thanks to its excellent weather and historic ties to the UK.
With British help, the Maltese ousted Napoleon and developed the island as a key strategic naval base. The islanders were also later awarded the George Cross for their bravery in the Second World War.
The island's main source of income is now tourism and it is a favourite spot for holidaymakers and British expatriates alike.
