MEPs tell Pope expatriates 'not a problem'

Four Romanian MEPs have met with the Pope and left him a letter explaining the expatriate and immigrant situation in Europe.

The meeting took place in the San Pietro Piazza of the Vatican, when the four politicians thanked Pope Benedict XVI for the Catholic Church's attitude to immigration, reports Romanian news site Roumaine.com

"This was a highly important and significant meeting," said MEP Corina Cretu.

"We managed to talk to His Holiness and we thanked him for the efforts of the Catholic Church in favour of the Romanian religious community and for keeping harmony in Italy," Ms Cretu told the site.

In their letter, the four explained that immigrants and expatriates should not be seen as a problem, but a resource.

It noted that immigrants and expatriates' "rights, freedoms and human needs cannot be ever ignored for economic or political reason".
