Long-haul destinations 'becoming more popular'

Brits are opting out of European travel and looking further afield, one travel firm has found.

According to online booking agent Skyscanner, searches for non-European destinations are increasing, while a number of locations in Europe are witnessing a drop in interest.

The firm says more people are looking further afield when planning their break. It says searches for flights to Bangkok were up 271 per cent.

Barry Smith, the firm's co-founder says: "The strength of the euro seems to have scared off many travellers."

Worst hit was Prague, according to the research. Also badly affected were Spain, France and Italy.

Travellers have been warned to avoid Mexico and the US because of the avian flu pandemic, which, it has been claimed, has infected more than 2,500 people in the US alone.
