International research has placed London in first place on a list of Europe's best business destinations.

According to the European Cities Monitor, the English capital is the continent's most desirable place to found an enterprise.

Conducted by global real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield, the survey canvassed the opinions of 500 senior executives around Europe.

Expatriate workers may have been among the respondents who were asked to consider which locations are best for locating a company, and which are top for business overall.

London was ranked highest for the twentieth year in a row, followed by Paris in second place and Frankfurt in third.

Cities were also rated on a number of criteria, including quality of life, telecommunications and availability of staff.

Chair of the London Assembly Darren Johnson warned against complacency and noted a number of areas in need of attention.

"One of them is freedom from pollution and obviously we have got some serious air pollution problems in London," he explained.
