Kuwaiti expats in protest over 'late wages'

Yesterday (October 4th) saw expatriate labourers gather in Kuwait to demand payment of allegedly overdue wages it has been reported.
According to the Kuwait Times, around 700 workers joined the sit-in, protesting that their salaries were three months late.
They are believed to have met outside the emirate's labour ministry in order to urge the authorities to intervene.
Many workers told the newspaper that they are now working under out-of-date visas as their employers have failed to renew them.
The three unnamed construction companies said to employ the labourers are also accused of withholding passports and not allowing staff to resign or see their families.
Following the protest, Mansour Al-Mansour, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour's assistant undersecretary for labour affairs, told the news source: "We have summoned the owners of the three firms and made them sign pledges to pay the overdue salaries of workers."
Last month saw Arabic newspaper Al-Seyassah report that the recession was driving increasing numbers of expats out of Kuwait.
