Irish politician slams tax exiles
09/04/09 14:56
The Irish Labour Party's spokesperson for Europe and Human Rights, Joe Costello, has criticised tax exiles who move between the country and warmer climates.
Mr Costello was reacting to the Irish government's preliminary budget announcement, which he branded "a disaster".
He accused the government of putting property before people in letting investors continue to claim tax relief and lambasted tax-exiles and artists.
"The 6,000 tax exiles who flit between Ireland and exotic tax havens around the world have not been taxed one cent in this budget," claimed Mr Costello.
The European Union was less scathing of the proposed spending plans - a commission spokesperson described the Irish leadership's moves as a "decisive, broad-based action".
Irish expatriates have settled in countries the world over - before they did so many may have taken out international health insurance to make sure they were covered for the unpredictable mishaps and illnesses of the future.
