International Medical Insurance News: Expats 'need to be on their guard'

The story of expat conman John Hirst's multimillion-pound swindle should remind foreigners living abroad to stay on their toes, Shelter Offshore reports.
Responding to the Telegraph's Anna Nicholas' blog post on the dangers posed by conmen overseas, the online expat advice portal explained that people may be more vulnerable to exploitation overseas.
Over seven years spent targeting expats living in Spain, France, the US and the UK, John Hirst managed to convince a sizable number of expats to part with more than £20 million in hard-earned savings.
He is currently under investigation by the Serious Fraud Office, having fled his home in Majorca when residents became suspicious of his activities.
Commenting on the story, the site advised: "If you're living abroad you need to be very, very careful when you pick your friends and decide to trust someone with anything from personal information to money."
Meanwhile, taking out an extensive expat medical insurance policy may be an effective way to insulate oneself against unmanageable treatment costs.
