International Medical Insurance News: Coping with expat culture shock

12/02/10 14:00

Expats planning a move abroad should be mindful of the likelihood that they will experience a culture shock upon their arrival, it has been warned.

Shelter Offshore reports that one of the disconcerting features of culture shock is that it can occur in places where it is least expected, such as in countries where cultural differences appear on the surface to be quite subtle.

"The key to handling culture shock is to recognise that it exists and to manage it. The important components for managing it are home, social life and having something to do. These may sound obvious but they really can help," the expat portal suggested.

Among the most helpful factors in overcoming initial culture shock will be developing a network of friends and having a sense of purpose, potential expats were advised.

Elsewhere, Shelter Offshore has recommended researching expat medical insurance policies carefully to ensure they are afforded an appropriate level of protection, without paying over the odds for additional services they are unlikely to need.
