International Healthcare News: Why Beijing is China's 'best city for expatriates'

An expatriate living in China has written about the delights of Beijing, the country's "best city for expats".
Writing in China Daily, Daniel Garst notes that the city shows a window into China's ancient history and its rapid modernisation with a collection of old, historic landmarks sitting beside newly built high-rise properties.
Although the writer concedes that the capital city is crowded and suffers an ever-worsening traffic problem, along with high levels of air pollution and extreme temperatures in summer and winter, Mr Garst also notes that Beijing hosts a thriving business sector, a large high-tech industry and three top-five Chinese universities.
"Thus Beijing's expats have a wealth of employment possibilities extending beyond business to education and media as well," he writes, adding that life in other cities may be more relaxed but these lack Beijing's expatriate work opportunities.
The city also has a flourishing arts culture, encouraging its residents to sample different music, literature and museums, Mr Garst argues.
This week, in a change to China's public health system, smoking was banned in hospitals to help reduce the number of deaths from smoking-related diseases.
