International Healthcare News: Mediterranean diet 'beneficial'
09/03/11 18:57
International medical insurance customers living in the warmer climates might be glad to know that the Mediterranean diet is good for their health.
According to Dr Carina Norris RNutr, nutrition consultant, population studies have demonstrated a link between this kind of diet and "a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and strokes, certain cancers, as well as obesity and Type 2 diabetes".
Furthermore, she explained, research is starting to explain that Mediterranean diets can help to protect people's arteries from the damage that predisposes them to becoming clogged.
The comments follow research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, which found that the diet in question is associated with a decreased mortality from all causes.
Dr Norris RNutr explained the key foods in the diet that benefit people's health: "Olive oil is a rich source of monounsaturated fats, which have a beneficial effect on our blood cholesterol, and so reduce our risk of heart disease and stroke.
"And oily fish, like mackerel and sardines, are rich in the polyunsaturated fats, known as omega-3 essential fatty acids, which also help with our cholesterol levels."
