International Healthcare News: Expats given local vote in Bahrain

20/09/10 13:31

Expat health insurance policyholders living in Bahrain are being urged to take part in the municipal council elections, which are being held on October 23rd.

Expatriates who own property in the country and are registered on the electoral roll are eligible to vote in the local polls, but cannot take part in the parliamentary elections which are taking place on the same day, the Gulf Daily News explained.

"Civic services are meant for everyone in the country. The municipal council provides a wide array of services for expatriates who own property," Manama Municipal Council secretary Jassim Redha told the newspaper.

He said that expatriate medical insurance customers will now have a chance to vote for the candidate who best represents their interests.

According to a Financial Times article published earlier this month, Bahrain's forthcoming elections are fuelling political unease between the two most prominent Muslim groups - the Sunnis and the Shias.
