International Healthcare News: Expat lawyers fight for right to appear in court
17/06/10 15:21
Expatriate lawyers have a fight on their hands as they take to the Dubai courts to demand the right to practise in certain processes.
The Dubai Courts Director-General attempted to stop expat lawyers from appearing at the Court of Appeal and of Cassation from the beginning of 2009 and at the Court of First Instance until the end of 2012, Emirates Business 24/7 reported.
Egyptian lawyer Hamdi Al Sheewi then requested the Dubai Court of First Instance to cancel this notice but the Court of Appeal has now started to hear the challenge presented by the director-general of the legal affairs department of Dubai government.
The Emirates operates a federal court structure with a final court of appeal in Abu Dhabi, but Dubai has its own court system which is not subject to the federal supreme court.
The Court of First Instance includes the civil, criminal and Sharia branches of the court structure.
The case that the expatriate lawyers are working on has been adjourned until September 19th.
