International Healthcare News: Dubai lifts sponsorship restrictions

29/09/10 00:19

More expatriate health insurance policyholders will now be able to bring their children and families to Dubai after restrictions were lifted on the sponsorship system.

For a deposit of 5,000 dirhams (£862) per person, international medical insurance customers can sponsor family members' residence visas if they work in one of 57 professions that were previously barred from this practice.

These include cooks, drivers, private tutors, guards, construction workers, sales jobs and skilled manual positions such as plumbers, blacksmiths and welders.

Major General Nasser Al Awadi Al Menhali, assistant undersecretary for naturalisation, residency and ports affairs at the Minister of Interior, told Gulf News that the changes had been made to the system because some professions had not been allowed to sponsor their families regardless of how much they earned.

"Now we have solved their issues by allowing them to sponsor their families if they pay the required deposit," he added.

The news comes as Kuwait announced the scrapping of its own sponsorship system for expatriate medical insurance policyholders looking for work in the country.
