International Health Insurance News: Hawaii's high costs 'a myth'

17/02/10 13:00

The popular belief that Hawaii is an expensive place to visit is largely a myth, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

Commenting recently, a spokesperson for the tourism board said that the country is still extremely popular among holidaymakers despite the economic pressures being felt by many travellers.

"A holiday to Hawaii is considerably cheaper than visiting Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific for the same length of time," the representative insisted, adding that people have misconceptions about the cost of travelling to the island.

And for those planning a more permanent move to the island, it may be worth taking out a private expat medical insurance policy, as the state has abandoned its universal healthcare system.

The Hawaii Reporter noted that after introducing the public healthcare insurance programme, the authorities discovered that eighty per cent of those who enrolled previously possessed private medical insurance cover.

The scheme was dropped on the grounds that it was not achieving its aim of reaching the uninsured population.
