Home insurance is important for an expatriate

An expatriate with property abroad should ensure that the contents of their second home are covered by insurance, claims the AA.

Research by Zurich Private Clients revealed that one in ten people did not have insurance for their homes abroad which is a worry as the average holiday home contains contents worth £15,200.

Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, said: "When you're taking out insurance and you're looking at contents, it's important to make sure you've got sufficient cover for everything and that you do include everything."

According to Mr Crowder, homeowners need to take the necessary security precautions to keep their insurance policy valid as many leave their holiday properties empty for months.

"Common sense applies here – there's a duty of care on every insurance policy. If, for instance, you've left the main window wide open you're not going to get a very sympathetic ear from the insurer," he added.

National statistics show that 211,000 British households have second homes abroad.
