Healthy lifestyle 'could reduce cancer risk and medical insurance claims'
20/11/09 15:48
Scientists say making a few lifestyle changes can help prevent cancer, a move that could also reduce numbers making expat health insurance claims.
According to healthcare charity Cancer Research UK, researchers have understood for a long time that "thousands of cases" of the disease could have been stopped by living more healthily.
Dr Laura Bell, the organisation's science information officer, suggested maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking and avoiding sunbeds are just a few ways to reduce the risk.
Her comments follow the publication of new research by the World Cancer Research fund revealing almost 80,000 cancer cases in the UK could have been prevented by a balanced diet.
According to the data, around 40 per cent of Britons are unaware of the link between diet and cancer.
Commenting on the issue, Dr Bell said it was "worrying" that many still fail to understand the correlation between an unhealthy lifestyle and developing cancer.
"It's important to raise awareness of the cancer risks that most of us can do something about," she added.
