Expatriates relocating to Canada are expected to buy temporary expat medical insurance within five days of arrival or insurance providers may refuse to cover them.
The Telegraph states that a period of three months' expat health insurance cover is recommended for new expatriates and to avoid waiting to use Canada's health system, medicare, individuals are advised to apply on arrival for a state medical card from their province or territory.
Expatriate private healthcare insurance is available for medical services that might not be covered under a particular province or territory's health insurance plan, the newspaper reported.
These could include dental expenses, private hospital rooms, prescription medication and glasses, as well as ambulance services, the news source explained.
The Telegraph's report comes as the Canadian Medical Association's call to introduce a national patient charter to the healthcare system is questioned on its effectiveness by patient groups.
