France shows the way on helping expats

17/04/09 16:00

French president Nicolas Sarkozy has launched radical new plans that would see the UK and other European countries get their own French constituencies.

The proposals would see French expatriates living in the UK and other countries where they have a strong presence able to vote for a local representative to speak for their interests despite not living in France, the Daily Telegraph reports.

If the scheme proves a success, a similar development could be created in other countries, including in the UK for British expats.

Many expats living outside the UK need to ensure they have proper expat insurance to cover them in the event of an accident or loss of their job, but the French president's plans would give even greater protection to French nationals living beyond the country's borders.

During the last election campaign, Mr Sarkozy travelled to London, describing it as "one of the great French cities" in his efforts to woo votes from expats living in the British capital.

Meanwhile, a consortium of British expat groups has won the right to continue its campaign to change the UK's policy on pensions for expats.
