Follow traffic rules, Paris cyclists warned

Expatriates who enjoy cycling should take care when pedaling in Paris.
The Connexion, an expat paper for Brits in France, has reported the city's traffic chief Gildas Robert said about half of cyclists in the capital break the law.
As a result of ignoring the rules, cyclists have incurred more than three times as many fines (14,000) than they did in 2004 (4,000), it reported.
That said, the city will soon relax some laws, which will then allow two-wheelers to turn right when traffic lights are still on red.
The most common mistakes made by riders are going through red lights, turning without signaling, using phones while cycling and cycling under the influence of alcohol.
Paris has apublic bicycle scheme which allows users to hire a bike and return it to any of the cycle points around the town centre.
If you intend to cycle abroad or take part in any sporting activity then before leaving you should evaluate how much expatriate insurance you might need.
Author of Cyclecraft John Franklin notes that research shows cycling "is the single most effective action you can take to increase your lifespan".
